Blog 7: Final Reflection

Effective communication not only involves the speaker but also the listener. I recalled that in my first post, I mentioned that listening was equally important as speaking in a conversation. My belief has not changed throughout this course, but only intensified. It was fun during the lesson when we had to form a group, which consisted of a speaker, listener and observer. I was the observer then and had the chance to observe and pick out the non-verbal cues from the speaker and listener’s conscious or sub-conscious actions. It was an interesting lesson for me, because I am usually the listener and observer in a conversation. The signs that I observe in people’s actions intrigue me; the actions reveal something about them, even though no words are spoken.

I used to think that communication only involves the verbal and the non-verbal. Strangely enough, it never crossed my mind to consider all the essays, letters, and e-mails that I have written in the past as a form of communication. Thus, I was a little surprised when this course not only taught verbal and non-verbal skills such as oral presentation, but also how to write effectively using the 7Cs, how to write resumes and application letter, and how to do a full, formal report. The most memorable experience in this course would be completing the group research project with my team members. I have learnt how to be a team player and build interpersonal communication by executing assertiveness, empathy, versatility and affirmation. It was extremely difficult (and agonizing) to practise active listening and contribute to the project discussion after a long day in school. It was really embarrassing during one of my group’s online discussion when I fell asleep halfway. I dozed off while waiting for my members’ reply, only to find myself awake one hour later. Fortunately, my team members were very understanding and did not blame me. It still amazes me today that we were able to accomplish this mission within such a short stipulated period, and still managing our other modules.

The science of effective communication is difficult to comprehend. We need the right formula and the right conditions to achieve success. This course has reinforced the importance of effective communication. We have been taught the theories; we will need to apply the theories to reality and experiment, in order to investigate the true effectiveness of communication.

Dear Jia Yi,

I agree that many skills in communication has been picked up in the short span of 12 weeks.

To be honest, I also learnt the importance of being resillient during the course of the research project. Inspite of our heavy workload, our group managed to be ever efficient in meeting the various deadlines and I have to commend you and Barry for this.

I believe that learning is a continuous process and we will pick up the skills of effective communication along the way in our lives. Keep on learning and discover the beauty of life!

Hello Jiayi!

I share the same sentiments with you. It never crossed my mind that application letters, resumes, meeting minutes and reports are also considered as materials for communication. For example, it seemed only obvious that the assignments served as platforms for us to practice our communication skills. However, I have come to realise that job application letters and resumes are actually communication materials between job applicants and potential employers.

I am happy for you that you have had a rewarding experience from this course. I believe that this experience will be with you for a long time as you embark on your career after graduation next year.

It is a pleasure to have met and become friends with you.

Hi Jia Yi,

Indeed, effective communication involves active participation of both the speaker and the listener. The speaker must formulate his message according to the needs of the listener while the listener needs to make sense of the received message and then decide whether to response to the speaker. Therefore, if one wants to be an effective speaker or listener, s/he must grasp the communication process and pay attention to every aspect involved.

Now that we have learnt the theories of effective communication, we need to put them into practice in our daily life and personalise these communication strategies by taking into account the complexity of human relationships and cultures. It is also important to reflect upon ourselves as communicator constantly in order to communicate more effectively in any interaction.

Hello Jia Yi,

I do agree with you that effective communications involve both listening and speaking. Both play equally important roles. The former ensures one understands the problem, point or concern that the other party is trying to put across and the latter enables one to accurately address that issue or to voice out ones opinion in the most effective way.

This module has benefited me in the similar way as it has to you. It has provided both the theory of effective communications as well as enabled us to practice the skills we have learnt.

All the best for your test tomorrow!

Dear Binglin,

I certainly share the same sentiments. I remembered there were days when I sacrificed my sleep in order to finish this module's assignments, as well as other modules' assignments. There was a period when I was so busy and stressed till I had a pimple breakout.

Nevertheless, we managed to survive and it is another lesson well-learnt!

Hi Pei Yu!

I believe that learning is a lifelong process. We learn more as we are exposed to more aspects in life, which allow our wisdom to grow with age.

We will face many problems and difficulties in the future and hope we will be able to handle situations constructively and with grace, aided by the lessons learnt in this course.

It was really nice to get to know you too!

Hi Barry!

Communication is certainly a two-way process where active listeners are equally important as powerful speakers.

We have been taught the theories and the necessary skills and strategies. Now, it is our turn to put them into good use - practise effective communication in our daily lives until it becomes imprinted in us, part of us such that it becomes all natural (like our reflex reactions).

Overall, I am really glad I had the chance to work with you and Binglin, which showed me the power of team spirit and "unity is strength"!

Hi Hui Ming!

Although we have been taught the necessary skills and practised them in class, however we will surely face difficulties in putting them to use in the workforce after we graduate. The world out there is not as simple and cosy as our current environment.

Nevertheless, the lessons were valuable and are certainly beneficial if we can put them to use in our daily lives. As the saying goes, pracice makes perfect! As we hone our skills, we can better apply them to the different and complex situations we may face in future.

It was nice knowing you and good luck for your future endeavours!

Jia Yi =)
